Lakewinds Food Co-op, a natural foods co-op, has announced the recipients of its 2015 Lakewinds Organic Field Fund Grant Program (LOFF).
LOFF began in 2011 as a way for Lakewinds to deepen its commitment to providing local, organic food to the communities it serves. Since its inception, the program has given over $100,000 to support local farmers and farm associations.
“The financial burden these farmers face to maintain their commitment to sustainable farming practices and to provide high-quality, natural food to our local communities is considerable,” says Dale Woodbeck, General Manager of Lakewinds Food Co-Op. “We hope that by easing this burden we are able to help them diversify their offerings and improve food quality and accessibility for our customers and communities.”
Recipients of the grant use the funds to purchase new equipment, expand or upgrade their spaces, increase growing and storing capacity and more. Many groups also use the funds to achieve organic certification, a costly venture. This year, 11 local groups were awarded a total of $55,572 through the LOFF program.
