Greenville moms launch organic baby food company

It was a couple months into their friendship when Jessica Gates and Julie Hines decided to go into business together. Their product would be wholesome, nutritious, organic and delicious.

Neither woman had previous business experience, but they had a strong desire to provide kids, theirs included, better food choices than they found on the shelves.

A year later, Gates, 37, and Hines, 35, have started Harvest Moon Baby Food. The baby food company specializes in organic, locally sourced products that are as nutritious as they are tasty.

Never underestimate the power of two moms working together.

“The wheels started turning and we thought, wouldn’t it be great to be able to give kids the same level of nutrition that we are all striving for,” Gates says.

It’s perhaps easiest to explain Harvest Moon products by explaining what they aren’t. They are not processed, they contain no preservatives or artificial flavors and they contain no added sugars or fillers.

Instead, Harvest Moon focuses on purity of product. The fruit and vegetable purees are made with just the produce, or with a little added spice. The apple and pear cardamom has been a big winner so far.

The company is also planning to launch a line of organic cereals. Hines and Gates currently source fresh whole grains from the Grain Loft in Greer and then grind it themselves for optimum nutrition and flavor. The grains are also used in some of the purees geared toward older children.

“We both thought the processed foods available for babies were bland and tasted kind of bad, and they’re heat processed and treated and lose a lot of nutrients,” Gates says.
